It’s been a good year since we first met Leevi Lamadé, a good while before finding out about low key sample wizard LOUSELV. As a fan of the Triorität interpretations of Noa Erni’s “The Mental Traveller” (Kommerz essential!) Leevi had reached out via e-mail asking if we offered internships. We had to think about it… But shortly after he became our first staff member, friend and most recently signed artist. Under his moniker LOUSELV and on our platform Kommerz Records, Leevi aka LOUSELV presents his beat tape “haven’t been home for days”.

“‘home’ is such a relative term. it can be anything. a place, a feeling, a person or yourself/louselv. we are always looking for this one thing – especially at the age of becoming an adult. disoriented & self-confident over the past year, 22 sample-heavy tracks have emerged from this feeling. i still have not arrived.”

The 22 song-journey reflects his first year experiencing the big city and finding a ‘home’ for himself. Inspired by artists such as Knxwledge and Mndsgn, LOUSELV created new music out of his favorite yet most obscure finds acquired in hour long digging sessions on YouTube. The production on “haven’t been home for days” is as diverse as the source material sampled. His selection of Madlib-inspired bops, beatless loops, super dry Premo style tracks and even a screwed down Memphis-type beat make a perfectly curated, a bit nostalgic tape showcasing his massive sensitivity for groove and melody.

While most of the project is instrumental, two of the standout tracks feature high quality rap performances. The intro track “H.B.H.F.D.” features the melodic flow of Leevi’s long-time friend Scrambled, talented Upstate New York artist, who puts the coming of age theme of the tape into words. On “arctic monkeys”, NYC’s Rhakim Ali delivers dense word play and teleports us from Berlin into the dungeons of his hometown and its long history of bleak spitters (saying hi to the Wu).

As a drummer and vibe facilitator, Leevi Lamadé is a part of Berlin’s vibrant jam scene and linked up with various collectives, such as Pastiche International and SHUSH. Besides playing many nights at the Cassette Head Sessions jam, he’s also a founding member and the rhythm section of hip-hop-infused jazz trio KITCH.
